Pipelines, Premiers, and Prairie Politics: Carney Courts the West in a Rare Show of Unity
Prime Minister Mark Carney convened a virtual meeting with Canada's provincial and territorial premiers today, focusing on accelerating infrastructure projects of national importance and enhancing economic resilience amid global trade pressures.
A key outcome of the meeting was the agreement to implement a "one project, one review" model aimed at expediting approvals and reducing regulatory duplication for major infrastructure and industrial initiatives. Carney committed to introducing federal legislation by Canada Day to eliminate internal trade barriers across provinces and territories, fostering a more unified Canadian economy.
Calls for National Unity and Energy Collaboration
Ontario Premier Doug Ford emphasized the importance of national unity, advocating for collaboration with western provinces like Saskatchewan and Alberta. He highlighted the need for energy infrastructure projects, including pipelines to the east, to support economic growth and interprovincial cooperation.
Positive Outlook from Western Leaders
Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe expressed optimism following the meeting, noting a more positive relationship path with the federal government. He stated, "Everybody seemed to be on a little bit more positive relationship path, and that is what I was hoping for coming out of this meeting."
Manitoba Premier's Perspective
Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew, appearing on CBC's "Power & Politics," shared that feedback from “Winnipeg Jets fans” indicated approval of Prime Minister Carney's recent meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump, suggesting confidence in Carney's handling of international relations.
Upcoming In-Person Meeting
The next First Ministers’ Meeting is scheduled for June 2 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. While most of these high-level gatherings traditionally take place in Ottawa, hosting one in Saskatchewan is a rare and symbolic gesture. The location is seen as a direct response to calls for deeper engagement with regions that have often felt sidelined in national decision-making

All such great and positive things! Feeling very hopeful and excited for our country today.
