In a powerful display of shared values and enduring friendship, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reaffirmed their close bond during a phone call this past Thursday ahead of the G7 meeting in Kyiv, Ukraine.
The conversation, which comes as Trudeau is set to travel to Ukraine tomorrow, marks what will be his fourth and final visit as prime minister since the war began. Their relationship began in 2019, when the two leaders met and quickly described their connection as “very close.” Speaking on a first-name basis and often referring to each other as “dear friend,” they maintain regular contact every few weeks.
During the recent call, Zelenskyy expressed heartfelt gratitude for Canada’s unwavering support, saying, “We will never forget what the people of Canada have done for Ukraine and our shared future.” This sentiment echoes last year’s memorable moment when Zelenskyy awarded Trudeau the Order of Freedom, further solidifying the symbolic ties between the two nations.
As Trudeau prepares to attend the G7 meeting in Kyiv in person tomorrow, both leaders pledged to continue their close communications, ensuring that their friendship remains a cornerstone of the international effort to support Ukraine’s sovereignty and democratic values.
I am sad to see Trudeau go, he has handled the whole crisis we are in like a statesman. He has held strong not to be bated by the ignorance put before him. I am so proud that he supports Zelenskyy as all of Canada does.
