It’s all pretty positive today, and let’s be honest, the best news is that Donald Trump wasn’t involved.
Prime Minister Mark Carney met with several world leaders he personally invited to join the G7 sessions, even though they’re not official members. That includes:
Claudia Sheinbaum, President of Mexico
Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, President of Brazil
Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India
Lee Jae Myung, President of South Korea (why are they smiling so much, what was the joke about? Is everyone happier cause Trump is gone?)
And, of course, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy
Now, here’s something interesting I heard and honestly, it makes sense: it’s possible Trump left early just to avoid having to meet with Zelenskyy. (Maybe one of many reasons) Ukraine has been pressuring Trump to adopt stronger sanctions against Russia, but we all know how much Trump admires Putin. Just saying.
Meanwhile, Canada stepped up again. The federal government announced:
New sanctions against 77 Russian individuals and 39 entities
A $2.3 billion loan to Ukraine
And $2 billion in military assistance
Multiple joint statements were also released today, with full G7 support, on:
Countering migrant smuggling
Coordinating responses to wildfires
Advancing AI development
Investing in quantum technologies
Critical Minerals
Meanwhile, in Canada…
Doug Ford is mad at Netflix
A new documentary about his late brother, former Toronto mayor Rob Ford, just dropped on the platform. Doug Ford told reporters he has no intention of watching it and called the filmmakers “disgusting.” The Ford family was never consulted.
BC Conservative Party drama escalates
A leaked letter from party leader John Rustad alleges that three Independent MLAs are actively blackmailing Conservative members. This comes after two MLAs resigned from the party when Rustad expelled Dallas Brodie, who had repeatedly denied the reality of residential schools.
Premier David Eby says if Rustad doesn’t go to the RCMP, he will.
Manitoba wildfire evacuees returning home
There’s good news for many Manitoba residents: some evacuation orders are being lifted as fire conditions improve. Communities like Flin Flon may still be waiting until next week, but the situation is finally looking more optimistic.
Big win for Canadian manufacturing
LOT Polish Airlines has agreed to purchase 40 Airbus A220 aircraft, with options for 44 more — all of which are made in Mirabel, Quebec. The A220 was designed and developed in Canada and is supported by a strong Canadian supply chain. A massive boost for jobs and aerospace exports.
