President Trump has announced sweeping new tariffs on Canadian imports.
In a post to Truth Social late Thursday, Trump confirmed a 35% across-the-board tariff on Canadian goods, set to take effect August 1st, though he has previously delayed similar measures. The new tariffs come on top of existing duties on Canadian steel, aluminum, and copper, which remain at 50%.
Trump also issued a direct warning to Canada: any retaliation will be met with even higher tariffs, matching the value of Canada’s response.
Trump cited the ongoing fentanyl crisis, along with what he called “tariff and non-tariff barriers” imposed by Canada, claiming they pose “unsustainable trade disadvantages” and “threaten national security.”
Several key questions remain unanswered:
Will these tariffs apply to goods already protected under the USMCA (United States–Mexico–Canada Agreement)?
Are major Canadian exports like oil and gas affected?
Is this announcement final?
While the August 1 deadline looms, Trump has previously delayed tariff rollouts — leaving the business community in a state of uncertainty. But economists warn that even the threat of tariffs can chill investment and disrupt supply chains.
If and when these tariffs take effect, let’s stop fooling around trying to deal with this a***ole. Let’s cut energy exports and tariff the hell out of American products coming into Canada. It will hurt for a while but let’s not forget it’s a war and wars hurt everyone involved. There won’t be a clear winner in this conflict but we must inflict as much damage as we can on the enemy if we don’t want to be gobbled up by this nonsense. Enough is enough! We have to fight back! Geez!
Elbows up!
