100% provincial governments should stay out of municipal politics. I’m so angry that the UCP govt keeps interfering (like why do we need parties at any level, nevermind the municipal level?). It’s maddening.
It's complex ... therefore there should be a lot more collaboration to arrive at solutions. Provinces should be working more closely with municipalities on funding infrastructure - maintenance and new. Infrastructure needs have been ignored with multiple consequences including accelerating housing costs. Provinces should fund technology for municipalities to document/track zoning and infrastructure (it's currently mostly 'hardcopy') and a great deal of effort is wasted just 'planning'. Lack of affordable housing is a HUGE issue and Provinces should be working with municipalities on strategies to address this shortfall. We go further working together rather than at odds and that has always been a challenge for political egos.
Its definitely already become an issue in my municipality here in Alberta with how Bill 50 was just put into place in May. We had a counselor threaten to shoot someone during a committee meeting she sat on, and unregistered guns were found in her home. Nothing the municipality can do now that we cant have our own code of conduct!
As an Edmontonian as well it is wild that the UCP feels inclined to meddle in bike lanes but stays clear of the pressing issues in Education - something just a wee bit more important than fretting over bike lanes. And how curious is it that Danielle only mandated parties for municipal elections for Edmonton and Calgary..... and not paying back taxes owed to municipalities....and having taxpayers pay for orphan wells' messes.......Alberta rolls over and lets the UCP kick them in the guts.....

In BC the Minister of Housing is overriding development planning in our cities and municipalities. He has given building “quotas” that are to be met.
